Awesome things about the 80s: The music

A younger friend of mine recently dissed the 80s. It was only in passing, in his facebook status, but I was still stunned.  G — to quote Juno — “You weren’t there. You couldn’t understand the magic.”

So, in no particular order, I am going to do a couple of posts about awesome things about the 80s, starting with the:

We’re talking post-punk GOLD — just think of Siouxie and the Banshees (who I didn’t discover at the time, but only just recently) or The Cure:

Even the pop-y stuff is fantastic. Just think of The Bangles, or Madonna, or INXS or The Eurythmics.

And so many iconic bands from the 90s secretly had their roots in the 80s — the Smashing Pumpkins, Marilyn Manson, Nirvana, The Cranberries, Powderfinger — they were all formed in the late 80s.

Anyway, here is a song list I quickly made up, to prove how awesome 80s music is. Go away and listen to them and then come back and tell me 80s music isn’t AWESOME. I DARE you.

Too many amazing bands and songs to list really, in both the indie and mainstream categories. My favourite 80s band is, of course, The Smiths, and as a tyke I loved Culture Club, Duran Duran and Wham.

I also regularly listen to Shine by Kids in the Kitchen. Don’t tell anyone.
